The bedroom faded, and I blinked my eyes. My head felt fuzzy and heavy, like I’d drank too much Strawberry Hill. Papa blew out the candle, watching me closely.

“What did you learn?” he asked.

“That they were two jealous voodoo priestesses. Nothing good could come from that, Papa,” I said.

“What does it mean to you, the vision?”

I looked at the candle, hesitating. I was tempted to go ahead and tell him everything.

“I’m not sure, Papa. Let me think about it.” I got up to go back to my room, but then I remembered something I’d been meaning to ask Papa about. “Did Hera kill one of Grandmere’s children?”

Papa frowned. “Yeah. At least that’s another part of the story. It’s why Marie Laveau silenced Hera. As punishment for killing her child, she trapped Hera in a mirror and vowed to punish any of Hera’s ancestors that ever crossed her.”

“And I’m just now finding out about this?” I couldn’t keep the frustration out of my voice. Shit. If I’d known some of this crazy history, I’d been a lot more careful around Ana and her family. Especially her mother.

“Hey, I always thought it was just a story. Are you implying that it relates to everything going on?”

Again, I hesitated before saying, “No. I’m not implying anything.”

The image of the Old One’s carcass flitted through my mind as I headed to my room. Ana had finally supplied me with the name of the spirit Grandmere had trapped inside of it—Alaric Suze. Which of the voodoo gods was he? I also wondered who had told Grandmere the truth about what he was going to do to them. His wife? That might be useful information to know, too.

But in the end, I knew that finding out where this voodoo spirit was right now was important. If I knew that, then I could start figuring out a game plan.

If only Ana hadn’t disappeared before finishing her sentence.
